VOLLEYBALL STUDY GUIDE
History
Volleyball was created in 1895 when William G. Morgan , a YMCA instructor in Massachusetts, combined components of basketball ,baseball ,handball and tennis to create what he called “mintonette”. As observers watched the game , they noted the players where “volleying” the ball back and fourth . Thus ,mintonette was changed to volleyball . The first game of volleyball was played at Springfield College in 1896 . Then in1947 , the federation internationale De volley-ball (FIVB) was founded .

Basic Floor positions: Looking from an overhead view starting in the back right corner would be #1 also know as serving position. Then moving forward to the right front side, just behind the net is position 2, iimmediately to the left of this is 3 and then 4 is front left side. Directly behind this is position 5 and back center or middle of court is position 6. The setter always stands on the right side of the floor being floor position # 2. If they are coming forward from the back row to pass the ball to their hitters then they will stand between position 2 & 3 being 2.5 as there are 3 hitters already in the front row.
THE NET IS DIRECTLY ABOVE #'S 4 / 3 / 2
W Formation - THIS IS A BASIC 5 - 1 (formation) with setter in position 3
THE NET IS DIRECTLY ABOVE #'S 4 / 3 / 2

Study Guides
In all official matches ,the team which wins 2out of 3 sets is declared the winner of the match.
In rally point scoring , the team to reach 25 will win, as long as they have own by 2 points , or if there is a ceiling cap of 27 , first to win by 2 or reach 27 , wins.
There is a point scored on every possession of play. The "old" system of play was called side out which was only the serving team could score a point. Most games consist of 3 sets that make up a match. This is the team win best of 3 if it needs to played to a total of 3 sets. The server must serve from behind the service line and may do so across the entire back line. You may not step on the line for over hand in grade 8. Before this grade you may take 1 step in. The serve may touch the top of the net and go into play and it is declared a live ball the name of this play is LET serve. All servers must serve in correct rotational order.
A team receives the right to contact the ball three times in order to play it over the net.
A blocked ball does not count as one of the teams contacts. The ball may be hit with any part of the body including the feet. Any contact by a player with the ball must be clean and smooth. The ball may not be lifted, carried, pushed in a carried manor; this would be called as a carry ball.
If two players of the same team contact the ball at the same time this counts as two of the teams’ three allowed hits. A player may not hit the ball twice without another player contacting in between time. (Other than a personal blocked ball counts as no other contact and that individual may play the ball again). A player may, however, play the ball again immediately blocking the ball.
Any ball landing on a boundary line is considered to be in. A player may not touch the net when the ball is in play. A player may not spike the ball if they are in a back row position , unless they do so from behind the attack line. A player may not be over the center line with any part of their body except for there feet. A player’s foot must have landed completely over the center line for them to be called for center line fault.
If two players from opposing teams commit a fault at the very same time , a replay or reserve is called by the ref .
A team is trying to get the ball on the floor of the opposition while at the same time protecting the floor on it’s own side of the net . In order to protect the floor best team should organize themselves into a “W” formation . This formation should be used whenever the opposition is serving the ball . Remember that when the ball is on the other side of the court , the 3 front player’s on the non control side should eb at the net in ready blocking position. The formation is as follows ; Player never contacts the first hit because they hopefully will set the second touch. A player may also contact a ball on their foot and have it go over the net. This is legal to do in todays game.
Player’s 2, 4 and 6 should receive all shallow balls .
Player’s 5 and 1 should receive all the deep played balls. (This is in a perfect situation)
The ball is live off the net during a rally play , when the ball is dead (out of bounds , roof , etc) player’s must return the ball to the other team under the net ( the ref may give a warning or yellow card ).
The Antenna:
The antenna is a red and white pole attached to the net, creating an invisible line from the boundary line on the floor to the roof. The ball must be played between the two antennas. If it goes outside the antennas, it is a loss of point and serve to the team who played it out.
The Attack line:
The attack line is 3 meters (9 feet) away from the net. It seperates the front row players from the back row players. A back row player may spike the ball but must jump before the attack line. The may land over the line after spiking the ball, though. If the back row player steps over the line, and jumps to spike, it is a loss of point and serve.
The preferred "perfect" play:
A perfect play in serve reception, is bump, set, spike. The first pass would probably be from a back row player, and/or positions 3 and 4. The set (or 2nd pass) would be from the setter, who stands in floor position 2. The spike can be from front or back row player.
