Badminton Serves
•FOREHAND LOW AND SHORT: this serve is used in a doubles game so their opponent can not smash it back in their face.
•BACKHAND LOW AND SHORT: this serve is used in a doubles game so their opponent can not smash it back in their face.
•FOREHAND HIGH AND LONG: this serve is used in a singles game to force their opponent to the back of their court.
Serving Rules
•You cannot step into your serve you must use the “rock step” to get power behind your serve.
•Your foot cannot step past the service line during your serve.
•Your serve must land past the short service line and before the long service line.
•Your serve must go diagonally.
•If your serve lands ON the line then it is good.
Badminton Strokes
•SMASH:this shot is used to end the rally. You should be contacting the shuttle in front so it goes straight down.
•DROP:this shot is very similar to the smash. Instead of following through you will stop your arm and just push the shuttle over the net.
•CLEAR:this shot is the most common shot used in badminton. It can be overhead underhand, forehand, backhand.
•NET SHOTS:these shots are done around the short service line to the net. This is used to pull your opponent all the way to the net to then send a shot deep into their backcourt.
•DRIVE:this shot is a shot that crosses the net flatly. It is usually played from the sides of the court when the shuttle is too low to be returned with a smash.
Competitive Play
•If the score is an even number the serve is from the right side.
•If the score is an odd number the serve is from the left side.
•In a doubles game, you must remain on your side until you switch sides due to a serve.
Doubles Strategy
•Up-and-Back: One player will cover the front court near the net, and the other player will cover the back court ready for any deep shots.
•Side-by-Side: Each player will take any shot sent to their side of the court.
The net is 1.55M or 5 Feet in height.
